Alexandre Borgeaud is a Swiss multidisciplinary artist, graphic designer, and freelance illustrator based in Lausanne. Born in 1988, he grew up in a family that was particularly attuned to the visual arts, so it was only natural that he would pursue a degree in the arts. His training in graphic arts has opened up a creative, exciting, and diverse career path for him. In 2020, a deep need to reconnect with more “hands-on” experiences — from which the screens of his profession had distanced him — and the need to give shape to his environmental convictions led him to rebalance his freelance work between graphic design and illustration commissions on the one hand, and more personal artistic projects on the other.

It was during this period that the MIROIR MIROIR studio was founded. Conceived in partnership with her sister Nathalie Borgeaud (a designer), this project brings their talents together under one roof. Beyond their shared aspirations and a clear family resemblance, the name “miroir miroir” also reflects their intention to use artistic creations to mirror the environmental absurdities of our time. Each project thus develops its own story, presenting the viewer with an image that sometimes inspires outrage, but also — and above all — invites wonder and a shift in perspective. Like a mirror, these works depict a picture of our planet’s current state that is at times tragic, at times magnificent, to encourage the re-rooting of a Western culture that is often disconnected from the earth…

Currently based in Lausanne at the Ateliers de Bellevaux (an association providing studio space for Lausanne-based artists), the MIROIR MIROIR studio will become a more personal endeavor for Alexandre Borgeaud in 2023, following his sister’s move abroad. The focus then shifts to his creative work in the fields of visual arts, graphic design, and illustration. To promote and foster the one-off artistic collaborations that are so dear to the artist, the workspace retains its status as a “laboratory for visual exploration.” It is a space open to all creators who wish to share and develop a joint project (or any other form of artistic or conceptual collaboration).

A socially conscious artistic approach

Focusing on the rich theme of insects between 2020 and 2023 (primarily in collaboration with his sister), he sees this subject as fertile ground for the environmental messages he holds dear, but also as an inspiring and underappreciated source of visual inspiration. For these same reasons, he then turned his attention to the fascinating world of the ocean floor. At first glance, these are two distinct cosmos, yet they reveal surprising similarities as his projects unfold. Now moving seamlessly between these two worlds in his new works, he comes to realize that a single underlying theme emerges from it all: life (and our societies’ disregard for it). In the years to come, new ecosystems may join these two foundational themes, for the creative wellspring they represent — though sometimes threatened in reality — seems inexhaustible in terms of inspiration…

Overall, the artist’s work offers a critical perspective on our consumer society without losing sight of its primary goal: to convey positive messages, foster a shared sense of awareness, and inspire a deep sense of wonder at the infinite synergies and forms of life. Eager to approach his work with a certain scientific rigor, he adopts a method that combines seemingly contradictory principles: action and observation, chance and methodology, intuition and reflection, fantasy and rationality… or simply a welcome convergence of the visual arts and biology. see

A wide variety of graphic design projects

A professional in graphic design since 2012, following an apprenticeship that began in 2009 at a Lausanne-based communications agency, he continued his career in the corporate world until 2014. Entrepreneurial opportunities then led him to explore new sectors, including event planning. However, he always kept one foot in graphic design and illustration, eventually making it his primary, independent business in 2020.

A career path rich in diverse and varied encounters has enabled him to build an extensive network. This ideal situation has opened doors for him to take on projects in both the nonprofit and corporate sectors. Particularly active in the creation of visual identities (his main passion in the field), he also collaborates with a wide range of cultural organizations, allowing him to carefully and consistently develop exciting and diverse visual worlds. see
